DOES YOUR EATING DISORDER GIVE YOU A SENSE OF BEING "SPECIAL"?

Sometimes having an ED gives you a sense of purpose, identity, and a sense of knowing what to do. To give that up would feel empty, purposeless, and as if you don't know who you are or what to do. She suffered from anorexia and bulimia for much of her adult life. She is struggling to surrender being thinner, but also letting go of the struggling between food, dieting, and the "purpose" she's received from her eating disorder. Without the crazy she feels bored. FOOD ADDICTION: SURRENDERING TO FEAR OF DEATH

She suffered from binge eating for over 30 years. We are discussing how different the impulse to overeat is when you no longer shame yourself. When diets are removed, the physical pain of overeating is more recognizable. We discuss survival mode and the impulse to overeat if when it is forecast that food is going away. ORTHOREXIA: EGO, SURVIVAL, AND THE HUMILITY TO FAIL IN UNHEALTH

She was raised in a very strict religion and was given praise for being thin, "perfect," and "smart." As she began to question the religion, her focus shifted from needing a religion to controlling her body. She worshiped dieting, controlling food, and the idea that being thinner was healthier. As she let go of her need to be thinner her urges to binge significantly reduced. However, she still held herself to concepts of "health" through food restrictions. This round of sessions we honed in on the beliefs of health to discuss the underlying fears she would need to face in order to fully recover. We discuss survival mode and the link to her ocd behaviors. ANOREXIA: CAN YOU END YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THINNESS?

She suffered with anorexia and bulimia, more so after having children and trying to lose pregnancy weight. She is struggling to let go of her desire to be thinner and fear of food, even though she has suffered greatly. We discuss the victim "poor me" mentality that occurs during the process of recovery as a HUGE block to getting freedom. RECORDED JULY 2017

BINGE EATING: THE MOMENT YOU REALIZE HOW TO STOP

This client is struggling to understand the link between her shame about her body, and the pressure to lose weight for health reasons and her impulse to eat excessively. The link is the "diet famine" concept. Believing the food is "bad" makes it seem as if she must restrict it to keep from feeling "bad" about her body. Aslo, using the hunger scale feels like a "diet" to her when she wants to eat emotionally. This process can be very confusing, especially when people don't understand the impact diets have on bingeing and enabling emotional eating. RECORDED JULY 2017
